producing long distance

Since my band and I are no longer in the same city, we're back to doing long-distance production to finish up our record.

What tricks and tips do you have to make this process as painless as possible?

We used to swap reason files all the time, and the self-contain setting is so great for that - one file is all you need. Swapping logic sessions etc gets a little more tricky. Nate had the idea the other day that we might be able to just swap the session file since we had finished recording and we all had the same sound files. We haven't tried this yet, but that would make trading edits much faster!

Your tips / experiences?
is there going to be a way to transfer files directly on this site?

trading high quality mp3s of the tracks is the only reliable method i can think of right now...
I really hope so. Earlier today I squealed like a little girl when I had the idea of using muxtape as a backend for mp3 uploads here --- but they don't have any sort of api, and looks like they aggressively block deep-linking. I guess since it's primarily used to upload copywrited content.

I'd try something like archive.org but the idea of sending people there to upload is scary. That shit is NOT user friendly.

What is? This is what I ponder. wink

oh look i derailed my own thread, lol
Also I haven't totally thrown out the idea of hosting some content myself, but I know that will quickly push my bandwidth through the roof and put me on the street. wink Well, not that quickly, but I'm sure it'd get expensive fast.
also may want to have the ability eventually to limit downloads only to specific users... maybe the band would be able to check off the names of artists they'd like to give access to the tracks... in which case, a public site like archive may not work.
how much bandwidth do you expect?
more then 15tb/m ?

i'd be happy to contribute a few bucks to get things started.
Thanks for the links Matt. smile Site 5 looks great! I decided for ROB to go with Amazon's S3 - bandwidth is cheap, and you only pay for what you use, so hopefully that'll end up working out. Joey tells me a lot of startups use it.
I'm just starting to teach myself version control with SVN for work and it dawned on me - does anyone use this for music? I'm not far into reading about its capability, but already as I read it seems way more power than I thought.

Using SVN to sync logic sessions for example that are stored on a remote server and synced locally seems like a pretty killer way to collaborate. I can imagine that merging data would get messy quick, right? Reading more...

Prolly post this on em411 too since only like 4 of us post here at the moment. wink
